#22 – How satisfied are we? – July 25, 2024
Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.”
I was reading in a little book entitled “He Calls me Friend” by Larry Dugger and came across a little story from a man who talked about one of his favorite childhood memories. He said that whenever their family would gather together for a big meal, his father would make his famous homemade peach ice cream. He explained the process it took to complete the delicious treat and it was always a big hit with all the relatives. He admitted that over the years he must have eaten several gallons it.
After I read it I sat and remember a few of my mother’s wonderful treats. On occasions she would make, what we would call, a “Candy Cake”. On a graham cracker crust she would put layers of butterscotch chips, chocolate chips, pecans, coconut, and then pour a can of sweetened condensed milk over the top. Then she’d put it in the oven at 350 degrees (don’t know for how long) and bake it. Oh, my goodness! Talk about a sugar rush! If she would have let me, I would have devoured the entire cake by myself!
Now you might think that cornbread is just cornbread, and it can’t taste any different than one from another. My Aunt Jewel made the best cornbread in America. It was buttery and moist. If there was any left over from the meal, I’d ask her if I could take the rest home. She always said yes! Every time we headed to her house, all I could think about was that cornbread…and she always had it ready.
At Christmas, and only as a treat for Christmas, Mama would buy a bag of chocolate covered vanilla drops. Then she’d salt and toast pecans. As soon as we spotted the bag of drops sitting on the counter, we knew what was coming! The saltiness of the warm pecans and the sweetness of the drops made the perfect Christmas snack. (I still make this today when I can get the vanilla drops.)
We Baptists do like our food and if you’re a Baptist that has been raised around Southern cooking, you’re in for a treat. I’m not saying that the things I mentioned above are good for our health, but…they’re just plain good!
Food is a staple for our survival. The Word of God is a staple for our salvation. What we are fed from the food we eat keeps us physically alive and healthy. What we consume from the scriptures we read keeps us spiritually alive and healthy. No two things are more important to our well being.
Most of us find time to eat three meals a day. But how much of our day do we consume what we need spiritually? I cannot express the importance of reading and studying the scriptures, especially in these days of turmoil that we are experiencing. And as you read, keep a good highliter with you. You will come across many verses that will just stand out to you…highlite them. There will be some that will seem to speak directly to you in any situation you may be facing…highlite them. You will see the words that Jesus gave us to make us aware of what is happening, and what will happen…highlite them. There will be words of wisdom, teaching us how we are to treat others, even those who try to bring us down…highlite them.
God may not speak to us the way He did with Moses, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, David, and many others but he does speak to us. We are blessed to have access to His words from the people He chose to write it down and send it to us through the Holy Word of God. God’s inspired words were given to us for many reasons; to teach us, help us, and feed us the instructions needed for our everyday life just to mention a few. Devour them. Crave for them. They will satisfy your spiritual soul better than any “candy cake” can satisfy you physical hunger.
If you watch the news there’s a lot of talk about how people want to hear the truth. Some people do. Some people don’t want to know the truth about anything, because it may sway their way of thinking. The only “true truth” is in Jesus Christ. John 14:6, “Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Set your appetite on the sweet goodness that comes directly from the Words of God, and reject the bitter taste of the world around you. Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” The only way to do that is with learning and understanding through the Holy Word of God.
Pick it up, open it up, eat it up…and you will be satisfied!
